The power of Instagram.
There’s a reason that I don’t wear trousers all that often, it’s because more often than not I feel that they just don’t suit me.
However the Bob Pant from Style Arc kept catching my eye and I relented. They looked really cute on everyone that has made them and who doesn’t need a simple pair of woven elasticated trousers in their wardrobe?
These trousers have an edgy balloon shape to them, and also have side seam pockets.
If you have not sewn a Style Arc pattern before, I think it’s fair to say that they are pretty basic. They are a digital download, and everything that you need to know (ie the measurement charts, fabric recommendations and sewing instructions) are all found on your pattern printout - no separate sheet of instructions, cutting layouts etc.
The information that you are given is extremely brief and to the point. To be fair, it’s all there, but you might need to read through it a couple of times before it all falls into place. If you do struggle with these basic instructions and prefer to see some step by step images of what you are making then Style Arc do provide a much clearer written tutorial with photographs which you can access from their website which can be found here.
After reading a few pattern reviews before I started, I decided to cut my trousers out one size smaller than guided. This meant I cut out a straight size 12. The trousers pieces looked a little long to me, so I shortened the leg length by 1″ before cutting out the fabric. I could have gone shorter as I still needed to take off another 2″ or so when hemming them which was then quite awkward due to the tapering in at the ankle (and the fact that I wanted a turn-up).
The pockets also are placed a little too low for me. If I sew these again I would raise the pocket height by an inch or so. I used silky lining fabric for the pocket pieces as I think the linen outer fabric would have been too bulky.
Talking of the fabric, I used a lovely cotton linen blend from Dalston Fabrics in the shade ‘grey’ found here. This was very reasonably priced at £6.60 per metre, and it was perfect for this project, although there is a little pilling of the fabric where it has rubbed between my legs, even after only 2 or 3 wears.
The trousers were very quick to make up, and in no time at all they were sewn. I’m not sure that I will make another pair, as I just don’t think they suit my shape, however they are a cool design - I wouldn’t have bought the pattern if they didn’t look good on all the other versions I’ve seen after all! But, I think I will stick to dresses for now.
Take care and I’ll be back soon,
Kathy x
